Alex Fong
ArtTalk:  “Confetti... a celebration...!”
- its colourful history from prehistoric
times to the present in Fong's World

Born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1956, Fong’s
interest in art began as a child. It was during a
two-year course in interior design that he discovered
watercolour, and the freedom of colour and
expression that matches his vision of the world. His
work reflects both his extensive study of asian
artists, and the influence of impressionists such
as Van Gogh and Monet.

In a style the artist calls “Contemporary Oriental”, he
contrasts soft pastels with splashes of darker hues to
capture both the symmetry and imperfections of
nature, from pastoral landscapes to florals, to birds
and wildlife. A parade of small, brightly coloured
triangles, dots or squares spontaneously scattered
throughout the image - an effect he calls ‘confetti’
- is characteristic of a Fong painting. “I liken this
to a person wearing attractive jewelry or clothing.
Once something catches your eye, you want to take a
closer look.”

Fong continues to experiment with other media, and
occasionally collaborates on a piece with another
artist. His watercolour workshops are always
well-attended by artists wanting to develop their
own self-expression through this medium. Fong’s
works are collected by art connoisseurs both
nationally and internationally.

Mike Svob
ArtTalk:  “A Painter's Kaleidoscope”
- a journey with Mike Svob through colour,
  shape and time

Mike has been a professional painter and artist since
the early 1980’s, and is an impressionist-style painter
that is easily identified by his signature use of strong
bold colour. His artistic achievements have included
mastering watercolours, acrylics and oils. To date,
Mike has held over 70 exhibitions and has produced
over 25 large scale murals and installations.

Mike studied at the University of Western Ontario. He
is a past president of the Federation of Canadian
Artists and is a Senior member (SFCA) of this
society. As an award-winning artist and leading
workshop instructor, Mike strongly believes that
broadly sharing his knowledge among his collectors,
fellow artists and art students will provide only
positive results for all.

Mike Svob’s paintings are held in numerous private
and corporate collections throughout the world. His
paintings and teaching methods are included in
several art books and have been featured in
many art publications. A passion for art, history
and travel continue to provide inspiring and
diverse subject matter for his work.

“In my work I try to bring the viewer into a new
and potential obtuse sense of space and colour... to
imagine a world of visual possibilities. I have always
been deeply moved by the colourful patterns and
subtle shades of light upon the landscape. The warm
sparkle of fresh snow in a cool brilliant winter light
or the patterns made by trees dancing in the wind, the
soft ghostly lost edges from water falling and
splashing on rocks. To be at once both aware of the
reality and intrigued by the fanciful possibilities.
As an artist, I try to capture the essence of the
moment, distill out what is unnecessary, and add my
twist so the viewer is left with an impression of
the landscape that will endure through time.”
