Yuan Cheng Bi

Born in 1957 and raised in Jinan, China, Yuan Cheng Bi’s career as an artist began at an early age in his home country. Under the guidance and encouragement of his father, Bi began painting at age five. Bi was mentored by one of China’s most prestigious art professors, studying landscape painting in watercolour and oil. By 1975, Bi had already established himself as an accomplished art instructor in Jinan’s local art club. In 1979, Bi moved on to attend the ZiangXi Art University, graduating at the top of his class with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art. Many of Bi’s pieces were collected and displayed by the university’s art museum.

After graduating, Bi went on to work in landscaping and sculptural design at the Shandong Architectural Company. Bi’s work in sculptures found widespread recognition and celebration with the opportunity to design the sculptural landmark for Shandong Stadium – the provinces largest sports facility. The finished product was a metal and concrete sculpture standing thirty meters high, symbolizing the unification of people through sport. Bi’s accomplishments had become renowned throughout the Shandong province and in 1987, the province presented Bi with the distinguished title of a Chinese Art Master. Following this privileged acknowledgment, Bi was accepted into the prestigious Chinese Encyclopedia of Art.

In 1990, Bi immigrated to Canada and lived in Edmonton for twenty years. After opening his own studio in 1992, Bi was asked to paint grand scale murals throughout Alberta for many prominent locations such as the Edmonton International Airport as well as the Lamont Health Care Centre.

Bi’s accomplishments have brought him recognition from China to Canada. He now resides in Richmond, BC where he continues to paint. His pieces can be found in both private and corporate collections around the world.
