Brien Foerster

Artist Info

Raised on Vancouver Island, Brien Foerster has had an appreciation of the rich Native cultures of the Northwest coast all of his life. At a young age, Brian’s style and design caught the eye of one of Canada’s best known carvers, Jim Gilbert, who began instructing the boy in design. Brien was also mentored by the renowned Hunt family in Canada as well as by other prominent Native artists.

From 1985 through 1990, his works were predominantly in wood and serigraphy, reflecting some of the most interesting aspects of the Haida and Kwagiult art forms. Slowly, classical Japanese and Impressionist European art began to influence Brian’s work, adding new dimensions to his traditional Native design. By 1992, Brien began to explore new mediums such as stone, bronze and clay which added a new depth to his works. Presently, the artist works predominately in soapstone, alabaster, and wood.

Brien seeks to create minimalist, elegant flowing animal, human, and celestial forms which are well suited to his mediums. With his smooth, simple lines, the artists creates powerful sculptures which evoke a sense of awe and wonderment at the elegant beauty of each piece.
