Richard McDiarmid  SFCA, NWWS

A well known Western Canadian artist, Richard works in oils, acrylics and watercolour. His paintings focus on light and rhythm expressed through the abstraction of pattern, movement and the interactive nature of colour. Although the forming processes vary, the painting surfaces are energized with a more explorative or random start in developing the visual image. Subject matter most often integrates human activity and surroundings in a visual narrative that invites the viewer in, to discover and explore, to complete the story or continue the inner journey or experience.

Born in Vancouver, B.C., Richard initially followed a career path in mechanical design/engineering and business development. In 1970, a renewed interest in fine arts and art history opened a parallel track, filling all hours with creative activities. Painting became a passion and led to a full time commitment in 1987. The parallel careers provided a wealth of experience and inspiration through international travel and exposure to many different cultural backdrops. Richard’s extensive training through University and College short course programs, artist’s workshops and participation in peer associations have all contributed to his growth as an artist.

In addition to being a prolific painter, Richard is highly regarded as an instructor and mentor to emerging as well as established artists. He has served the Federation of Canadian Artists for many years and has held positions at the board level, VP level, and as the initiator of numerous studio art educational programs within the organization as well as with other local arts organizations. Annual workshop instruction includes activity in Canada, US, Britain, France and Spain.

Richard is a signature member of both the Federation of Canadian Artists (SFCA) and the Northwest Watercolor Society (NWWS) and is a lifetime member of Painters at Painters, a prestigious B.C. artist's peer group. His many award winning paintings have been exhibited in solo shows, group shows and international shows including, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Federation of Canadian Artists, and the Northwest Watercolor Society (NWWS). Examples of his paintings and articles have appeared in a number of publications including International Artist's Magazine.

Richard's paintings can be found in commercial galleries and corporate and private collections in Canada, the USA, Britain, Europe, Japan and China.

Artist statement:

"Although painting and drawing had been a passion since childhood, any related pursuits were eclipsed in my early academic years by science and technical studies. Art academics and studio work did not begin in earnest until 1970 when a growing interest and study of art history planted the seeds for a life change in 1987. In those intervening years I was obsessed with painting and studied visual art and traditional as well as more explorative painting techniques. It was an intensive period of continuing work in the technical field, raising a family, and finding time to paint. I have been fortunate and give full credit to the many instructors, peers and friends who have encouraged and contributed to what I have learned and can apply in my personal journey as a painter."

"I am moved by light and rhythm and seek to know Its source in the none physical side of life. I believe integrity in painting is inherent in work that reaches or attempts to express the bridge between the physicality of our outer lives and the creative current that originates from within. The paintings that follow may be abstract, semi-abstract, or more representational. Sooner or later we come face to face with ourselves and there is no longer the desperation to discover something 'new and relevant' for each moment is a new and relevant expression."
