Artist Info

Virginie Bocaert was born in France. Since 2002 she has been living and working in Montreal. Bocaert began to show interest in fine art as a child. “It was around the age of 10 that I discovered oil painting and began exploring with the medium. As my parents were big fans of painting, they took me to Paris several times to visit artist workshops and studios. It was the experience of visiting artist spaces, art galleries, and museums throughout my childhood that enriched my cultural perspective...”

In 1997, Bocaert obtained a diploma in fashion design from the École Supérieure de Mode in Paris. After a career in fashion, the artist dedicated herself to painting full time. Following several workshops with artists like Anne Van Mierlo, Jennifer Hornyak and Marilyn Rubenstein, she decided to rent a studio and worked on developing here own style. Her work has evolved from abstract representation using mixed media to her current figurative works that denote the accumulation of life experiences. As a result, the paintings of Virginie Bocaert are very personal, almost autobiographical. Her works are like a visual translation of past or present moments of her life, finding their power in memory.

Bocaert's approach to painting is intuitive. The colors and forms are improvised on canvas, until they begin to make sense to the artist. Architecture, design and fashion are also sources of inspiration for Bocaert, as well as the different cities she has had the chance to visit during her travels. The people she has met and the places she has explored appear on her canvases and leave their trace. The human being has a strong presence in the artist's work; it is a subject that she enjoys treating in all its complexity and diversity. The artist in front of her canvas is in a constant state of construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction.

Bocaert's paintings have been shown in numerous solo and group shows, notably in Toronto, Montreal, New York, and Casablanca.
