Constance Bachmann

Constance Bachmann was born and raised in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. In the early 1980's she attended fine art programs at Langara College in Vancouver and the Okanagan College in Kelowna. She began painting professionally in 1994, regularly showing her work in Vancouver before returning to the Okanagan in 1996 to paint full time.

Upon her return to the Okanagan, Bachmann dispensed with brushes and developed an elegant and innovative technique with the palette knife. This technique, combined with vibrant colours, contemporary structure and compelling subjects, have earned Bachmann her reputation for producing uniquely distinctive work.

Constance is best known for her still life paintings but is continually drawn to abstract shapes, as reflected in her poppy and greyhound series.

Bachmann has a dedicated following of private collectors in Canada, the United States and Europe.

"My painting process begins with choosing a subject and the colours I want to use. I envision the finished painting before I begin but sometimes everything can change and I go in a completely different direction. I could walk into my studio and see a shadow across my painting and may incorporate that shadow into the piece. A touch of red in a flower could catch my eye and that in itself might trigger a whole new series. I continually challenge myself to express my work in a way that will make every painting unique.

There is a famous quote, 'a painting is never finished it only stops at interesting places.' I always keep that in mind because working with a palette knife is so unpredictable. I have to be open to change and know when to leave a stroke or when to continue. I paint layer upon layer until I'm satisfied."
